The Falchion is a one-handed single edged bladed weapon with European origins. The design is similar to that of the Persian scimitar and the Chinese Dao. Used from the 11th to 16th century the blade is typically 37- 40 inches in length and weighing less than 2 pounds. Its unique shape concentrates more of the weight near the tip of the blade making more effective for chopping strikes similar to an axe or cleaver. Unlike the double edge swords of the same time period very few of these survived less than a dozen are actually known to exist. A common misconception of this weapon is that it was used by peasants but it is commonly depicted used by knights in close quarter combat.
